Green Laser for Retina

What is green laser eye surgery?

The most often utilized laser for treating retinal problems is the green LASER/retina laser (532nm, double frequency Nd:YAG laser).A laser is nothing more than light with some particular features, such as being highly focused and in sync, which allows the laser form a precise point with very high energy levels.

Green laser eye surgery for diabetic retinopathy :

Diabetic retinopathy is one component of diabetic eye disease, but it is the most critical, and diabetic retinopathy is a blinding condition.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Let us quickly review what happens in Diabetic Retinopathy. Diabetes causes problems with the retina’s tiny blood vessels. They become leaky, allowing blood spots and exudates to accumulate in the retina. Over time, little blood vessels begin to die, limiting oxygen flow to the retina. As a result, the retina becomes hypoxic, meaning it has low oxygen levels.

This stimulates the retina to generate angiogenic factors, such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), which leads to the creation of new vessels on the retinal surface. The retina basically seeks to enhance the amount of oxygen that it receives. However, these new vessels are prone to bleeding, resulting in vision loss. Over time, they can contract, resulting in scar development. They also pull the retina, resulting in retinal detachment. This type of detachment is known as tractional retinal detachment.

Tractional retinal detachment can only be addressed surgically. All of these events can be stopped by treating the retina with green laser eye surgery for diabetic retinopathy. The vision loss can thus be avoided.

What is the effect of the green laser eye surgery on the retina?

The laser is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the retina, resulting in a process known as photocoagulation. This results in the death of cells in the outer retina while improving oxygen flow to the inner retina. As a result of this, VEGF production is lowered.

How does laser photocoagulation treat diabetic retinopathy?

As previously stated, VEGF production increases with the progression of diabetic retinopathy. This causes the creation of new vessels on the retinal surface, which can result in bleeding and eventually retinal detachment.

Green laser eye  treatment for diabetic retinopathy is performed on both the peripheral and entire retinas. Thus, the retinal laser treatment for diabetes is known as Pan Retinal Photocoagulation. In short, PRP laser for diabetic retinopathy. The laser kills cells in the outer retina, reducing VEGF production. This reduction causes the regression of new blood vessels. This, in turn, helps to keep the disease from progressing to more advanced stages. Laser treatment is a highly successful technique to avert blindness in end-stage diabetic eye disease.

Diabetes also has an effect on the central retina. This middle section is referred to as the Macula. When there is macular involvement in diabetic eye illness, it causes swelling known as macula edema. This causes a reduction in vision. While macular edema including the center is typically treated with eye injections, edema excluding the center can be treated with a laser. Central retinal green laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy is performed using either a focal laser or a macula grid laser. This provides a better long-term way to manage edema.

Green laser eye surgery procedure :

Retinal laser, also known as green eye laser surgery ,is  typically performed in the outpatient department (OPD).

Patients can leave the clinic virtually soon following the operation.

Prior to the procedure, a drop or two of an anesthetic solution may be injected into the eye to numb (anaesthetize) the cornea, which is then covered with a focusing lens. The doctor uses green laser light to treat the afflicted area and then removes the focusing lens.

Another way to perform the LASER is to wear a headband and use a non-contact lens to concentrate the laser. Various procedures are utilized for diverse symptoms.

Post-procedure care:

Since the laser is only light entering the eye, there are no cuts or openings inthe green eye laser surgery .Patients can immediately wash their face or eyes, and there are no post-procedure limitations.

The doctor may or may not prescribe eye drops for LASER-related retinal diseases.
